The latest development in the troubling case is that Shukri Abdi’s tragic death has been ruled an accident.

Shukri a 12 year old schoolgirl was found in the River Irwell, in Bury, Greater Manchester in June last year. Lawyers representing the Abdi family were pushing for the death to be ruled unlawful based on the actions of one of the children.

The coroner has revealed that there has been no evidence to prove that the child in question had any intention of killing Shurki, saying: “There is absolutely no evidence before the court that Child One had any intention to kill Shukri.”

Child One, despite allegedly knowing that Shukri could not swim, coaxed her into the water and lead her to believe she would teach her how to swim. The coroner has therefore ruled that Child One was negligent, and breached a duty of care, as the risk of drowning is something that should have been recognised.
