Sony files patent for tech that will turn any object into a PS5 controller

It’s hard to find a Sony PS5 at the moment.

The biggest issue is finding shops with PS5 stock available but that seems to be the least of Sony’s concerns as the team has been working on a way to transform household objects into PS5 controllers.

Your next controller could even be that mouldy banana that’s on your kitchen table right now.

Sony recently filed a patent for a new controller system, and it appears that it’s not just a banana that could be your next controller.

The system works for any “non-luminous passive object held by a user” and this means anything from a cup to a pen, to apples to bananas could be used.

In the patent application, Sony said, “It would be desirable if a user could use an inexpensive, simple and non-electronic device as a video game peripheral”

“The present disclosure seeks to address or at least alleviate some of the above-identified problems.”

Instead of QR codes or other tracking methods, a camera would capture pictures of the objects in a user’s hands and would then monitor them using pixels, contours, and/or colours in the images.

A game could be trained to identify objects as controllers. This could be anything from a banana to a boomerang or whatever else you can think of.

If you’ve been fortunate enough to purchase a PS5, you may be able to use any object in your home as a controller sometime in the near future.
