A shocking student dining horror story has surfaced from a report within the New England Journal of Medicine.
Less than a day after eating leftover chicken noodles from a restaraunt, a 19-year-old was taken severely ill, leading to a number of health complications with life-changing consequences.
What started as a severely high temperature and increased heart rate, ended in a stint in intensive care, with the amputation of his legs and fingers.
“The patient had been well until 20 hours before this admission, when diffuse abdominal pain and nausea developed after he ate rice, chicken, and lo mein leftovers from a restaurant meal,” the report says.
“The abdominal pain and vomiting were followed by the development of chills, generalised weakness, progressively worsening diffuse myalgias, chest pain, shortness of breath, headache, neck stiffness, and blurry vision. Five hours before this admission, purplish discolouration of the skin developed.”
He eventually stabilised, but the student developed gangrene in his fingers and legs, leading to parts of all 10 fingers being removed and a below-knee amputation.
It is believed the bacteria that caused him harm was spread through saliva, which is of note due to his roommate apparently vomiting after eating the noodles the night before.
Experts are still unsure on exactly how the food became so harmful, but say this kind of reaction is a “freak accident”.
