Most are familiar with the iconic Super Mario game series, it is one of the most easily recognisable and popular game franchises in world history, however, few would expect a copy of it to fetch such an astounding price as happened recently, making Super Mario Bros. the world’s most expensive game.
A group of shareholders paid a whopping $100,150 for an unopened test copy of the 1985 smash hit game which equates to £75,813.55. As the game was unopened and sealed with a rare Nintendo sticker, the seller was able to justify this high price. It has also been predicted that the value of the game will increase over time.
On the purchase, one of the shareholders, Jim Halperin said, “there are bets on what will someday be the first million dollar video game and many collectors believe that this will be the one.”
The original Super Mario Bros. game was released in 1985 by Nintendo and the game is often credited for reviving the gaming industry after the video game market crash in 1983.
