Last week, Billboard announced their list detailing the 10 Greatest Rappers of All Time list, and there were a few noticeable (and quickly noticed) omissions. In the intro to the list, Billboard did note; “we’re ranking these folks as MCs, not artists. That’s why Dr. Dre and Kanye West, for example, two legendary producer-rappers who don’t match the mic skills of those listed here, were left out.” The Top 10 suggested by Billboard included the likes of Biggie, Lauryn Hill, Ghostface Killah, Rakim and Lil Wayne but missed out a number of famous and influential names.
One person who took great offence to the list was LA rapper The Game who posted the list on Instagram with the caption; “y’all trippin on the order of this bullshit & bitch where the fuck 2Pac & Ice Cube ???” he wrote. “I guess Lauren Hill can out rap @SnoopDogg right ? Y’all out y’all mothafuckin’ mind !!! & just disrespect LL Cool J & KRS ONE huh ??? (Now I’m bout to roll my blunt to “Doggystyle” jump on my tour bus & zone out to “All Eyes On Me”, followed by “Makaveli” & “Death Certificate” & take me a fuckin nap on this bullshit….. then wake up & read the comments while a bunch of non hip hop educated fuck boys argue below… #FuckYallList”
Giving props to Snoop Dogg – who also blasted the list – The Game made his own Top 10 list, knocking the three picks that had everyone talking, and gave the top spot to both Tupac and The Notorious B.I.G. He also made mention of LL Cool J and KRS One, although they did not make his final top ten. The Game’s version of the list was met with favor from Snoop Dogg, who posted a video in response, and complimented the Documentary 2 album. The Game warned against making top 10 lists that fail to include Tupac, Ice Cube or Snoop.
