In a courtroom verdict that reverberated through the music world, Canadian rapper Tory Lanez has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for his role in the shooting of Grammy-winning artist Megan Thee Stallion.

The incident occurred following a heated argument between the two musicians after a party in 2020. Lanez, whose real name is Daystar Peterson, had been held in custody since being found guilty of three gun-related charges in December.

The altercation took a violent turn when Lanez shot Megan Thee Stallion in the feet, leaving her requiring surgical intervention to remove bullet fragments.

The shooting triggered a divisive debate within the music industry and beyond. The severity of the sentence was closely watched, with prosecutors initially seeking a 13-year prison term, asserting that Lanez’s actions displayed cruelty and a lack of remorse.

The trial also brought attention to the broader issue of violence against women, especially women of colour. LA District Attorney George Gascón remarked that Megan Thee Stallion’s high-profile status as a successful entertainer shone a spotlight on this critical concern.

Tanishia Wright, Director of Victim Services at the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office, said, “Violence against black women and girls is a long standing national epidemic that has long been overlooked and under-reported.

“Women of colour more times than not do not come forward to report victimisation due to the fear they will not be believed.”

Lanez’s legal team argued for leniency, suggesting probation and a drug treatment program. However, the judge’s ruling underscores the gravity of the incident and the necessity of holding individuals accountable for such acts of violence.

Lanez’s lawyer, Jose Baez, announced plans to appeal the sentence based on perceived irregularities during the trial.

Throughout the proceedings, Megan Thee Stallion maintained that the shooting had left her deeply scarred, stating in a victim impact statement that she will “never be the same” following the attack.

Despite differing accounts from witnesses, the court’s verdict stands as a significant step toward addressing violence against women within the entertainment industry and society at large.
