Pro-Trump supporters have breached the Capitol building in Washington DC, where elected officials were meeting to certify Joe Biden’s presidential win.

Chaotic scenes from the Capitol have emerged online, showing rioters breaking through barricades and storming the building.

The riot began after supporters of Donald Trump – who believe the election was stolen from Trump even though it was not – gathered in Washington for a ‘Save America Rally’.

Rioters have since openly clashed with law enforcement and smashed their way inside the Capitol.

The building, as well as neighbouring congressional office buildings, has been evacuated as clashes between Trump supporters and police became increasingly violent.

Mayor Muriel Bowser has ordered a citywide curfew beginning at 6pm and the D.C. government confirmed the National Guard will be arriving at the Capitol to control the situation.

Virginia Rep. Elaine Luria, who also evacuated her office, tweeted: “I don’t recognize our country today and the members of Congress who have supported this anarchy do not deserve to represent their fellow Americans.”
