Following the catastrophic disaster which caused the Grenfell fire last summer, the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan has revealed that Latimer Road station may be renamed Grenfell to pay tributes to those who tragically lost their lives in the blaze.

The West London station, which is in close proximity to Grenfell tower may have its name changed after the deal toll today reached a total of 72, however this number does not account for those still classified as missing.

Ever since the disaster, residents, members of the public and charitable organisation have been fighting to bring justice to those who sadly were involved. A Ministry of Housing document on the future of the Grenfell site revealed there was in fact a recurring “request to TfL for the renaming” of the Underground station in tribute to those who passed away.

In a prompt response, Mayor Sadiq Khan said he would consult with the local community as soon as possible, in regards to the proposal from the Grenfell United group.

“It’s really important that we remember the awful fire, but also those fantastic residents that campaigned so hard since the fire to make sure that justice is done,” he told LBC radio.

“When I was speaking to the family members, what was clear to me was their passion and their keenness to have a fitting tribute.

“The idea they had – and of course, we’ll consult others – is to rename the station Grenfell. It’s important we listen to local residents.”

A set of written principles, which is mutually agreed on with the community and signed by ministers and Kensington & Chelsea council, will control the way future decisions are made in regards to Grenfell.

Secretary of State for Housing Sajid Javid added his own comments: “I have always been clear that only by first listening to the community can we begin to rebuild their trust.

“This public commitment is a demonstration of us being true to that word and I am pleased we have been able to agree a way forward.”
