In the latest move in the social media world to filter out unwanted content for users, Twitter will now allow you to hide your mentions and replies.
Users will now be able to hide replies for both themselves and others in the new move which is being rolled out this month.
Twitter said in a post, “You asked for more control over your conversations, so starting next week we’re testing a new feature in Canada that will let you hide replies to your Tweets. For transparency, viewers everywhere can see hidden replies by going to a new icon or the dropdown menu”.
The social media giant also added said in a blog post, “Everyday, people start important conversations on Twitter, from #MeToo and #BlackLivesMatter, to discussions around #NBAFinals or their favourite television shows. These conversations bring people together to debate, learn, and laugh. That said we know that distracting, irrelevant, and offensive replies can derail the discussions that people want to have.”
“We believe people should have some control over the conversations they start. So we’re going to test a new feature that gives people the option to hide replies to their Tweets”.
The move comes as many are asking social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to take better care in safeguarding its users from harmful content.
Recently, it was revealed that Instagram might start hiding follower counts in efforts to reduce the pressure that visible follower statistics adds to the social media experience for some users. Read more about this here.
