Clubhouse is one of the most recent platforms to emerge in the social media space and now Twitter is testing a new feature called Spaces in a bid to compete with the new app.
Following the launch of Fleets which added stories to the social platform, Twitter users will now be able to create voice-based chat rooms with hosts, speakers and listeners in an almost identical way to how Clubhouse operates.
Spaces will also offer emoji reactions, live voice transcription and tweet sharing.
Only a small number of users currently have access to Spaces and the feature can only at present be used via the Twitter mobile app.
Spaces also relies on Periscope integration.
In a statement, Twitter said, “Audio adds an additional layer of connection to the public conversation. Musicians and authors have used it to bring their works to life, while other people used audio to tell stories, share emotion, and be their true, funny selves”
“We also know that people want to feel comfortable and in control when having conversations on Twitter.”
Twitter also made the decision to deliberately target women and those from marginalised backgrounds with their testing as they are often the recipients of online harassment.
Clubhouse is currently operating on an invitation only basis and has been criticised by some as “elitist” due to its social hierarchy system.
The app as seen a surge in popularity recently though and thousands of users have tuned into the app for music industry discussions, frank talks with Kevin Hart and even moaning competitions.
