Twitter have announced that their oft sought after trophy – aka the elusive blue tick – will now be up for grabs from just about anybody.

Whereas the coveted tick was reserved for celebrities and other high profile Tweeters, the company has announced they will soon be providing an open application form for getting verified.

Twitter’s Tina Bhatnagar said of the change, “Our goal with this update is to help more people find great, high-quality accounts to follow, and for creators and influencers – no matter where they are in the world – to easily connect with a broader audience.”

The previous criteria was previously only for “public figures and organisations in music, TV, film, fashion, government, politics, religion, journalism, media, sports, business, and other key interest areas”.

If a user now completes an application form and Twitter deem it in the public’s interest, then that blue tick is yours.

Twitter currently has 187,000 verified users out of its total 320 million users.
