Twitter has warned its users of a viral hoax which is locking many out of their accounts.

The hoax suggests users change their date of birth to 2007 to receive new colour schemes.

However, there are no new colour schemes to unlock as changing your date of birth reveals to Twitter that you are under 13-years-old which results in the website suspending your account.

The Support team for the microblogging site took to Twitter to warn users against changing their date of birth to 2007.

“We’ve noticed a prank trying to get people to change their Twitter birthday in their profile to 2007 to unlock new [colour] schemes”, Twitter Support wrote.

“Please don’t do this. You’ll get locked out for being under 13 years old”.

They also gave users instructions on how to retrieve their accounts.

“If your account was locked after changing your Twitter birthday to 2007, please follow the instructions that were sent after the change was made to your account”.
