A 27 page leaked report has revealed that the UK Government was advised to make a u turn on their policy on personal use drug possession in 2016. The government then became embroiled in a three year legal battle to keep the information from public eyes.
The report also suggests that criminalising personal use drug possession did little to stop people from taking drugs, and also had a negative impact on employment and education. The report is diametrically opposed to a policy that the government recently announced, which could mean that anyone caught with Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) could receive up to two years just for possession.
Other countries around the world have seen success with decriminalisation programs. Will the UK follow suit?
