Over a quarter of a million people have signed a petition trying to keep Trump from making a State visit to the UK. At the time of writing, 375,000 people have signed it, making the petition eligible for Parliamentary debate.

At 100,000 signatures the UK Government must consider the petition for debate and this petition well exceeded that in just a few hours. The petition bases its argument on Trump’s “well documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales. Therefore during the term of his presidency Donald Trump should not be invited to the United Kingdom for an official State Visit.”

Trump has continued to ruffle feathers with controversial executive decisions like his recent immigration ban for people with ties to select countries. There are currently thousands of protesters and immigration lawyers swarming airports accross America to help those who were in the air while the ban was put into place and might face difficulty re-entering.

The ban will impact even those with dual passports, such as Mo Farah, who is currently abroad training. As he is from Somalia, one of Trump’s selected countries, Farah could face difficulty getting back into the US where is family is based even if he was travelling on his UK Passport.

Jeremy Corbyn said this morning that he believes Mr Trump’s state visit should be put on hold for as long as the immigration ban is in place, aligning with the launch of the petition. If Trump does manage to get over here for a state visit campaigners are already encouraging a huge mass protest against him backed by Stop the War, People’s Assembly and Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND).
