Mexican drug lord Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman aka ‘Shorty’ has escaped from jail for a second time. Last year the authorities managed to recapture the Sinaloa Cartel leader which was hailed as a victory for Mexico’s government.

El Chapo was and still is the world’s most wanted drug trafficker, sneaking out of jail in 2001 hidden in a laundry basket ‘Shorty’ managed to avoid the US and Mexican authorities for 13 years. The US state department at the time were willing to offer $5m (£3.2m) as reward for leads to his arrest.

But once again money and power seems to prevail for El Chapo as 17 months after his re-arrest the 58 year old has escaped again from another high security prison. With sophisticated getaways in place such as tunnels in properties that allowed him to escape through the sewer system and tip offs from corrupt officers, Guzman’s elusive ways have returned to haunt the DEA and Mexican authorities.

How he escaped this time has not yet been revealed.

Responsible for the majority of drugs arriving on American shores, mass murders, drug wars and corrupting officers, finding El Chapo for a third time may just prove an even bigger test for the DEA and Mexican government.
