Fans of BBC detective drama Luther, this one is for you.

It’s been confirmed that Idris Elba will put back on his big scruffy coat and return in the role of John Luther for the show’s fifth season – despite previous reports that the show was done for good. Neil Cross, one of the show’s writers, confirmed the news to Digital Spy, saying, “it can’t be over, can it? There’s so much we don’t know. So much unfinished business.”

The last installment of the show aired as a Christmas special back in 2015. After that there were rumours of a Luther movie but it never arrived. The new season will be made up of four episodes – that’s a whole episode longer than previous seasons.

Talking about the decision to return, Elba said, “Neil, the BBC and I have been talking about a further season and I am thrilled that we have been able to bring it all together. I look forward to putting the coat back on.”

Idris Elba has been fully committed to the BBC recently, with his BBC 3 takeover including showcasing young British music and a series of short films in which he made a cameo.

No word yet on when John will be returning to our screens, but watch this space.
