With the release of Stormzy’s second album Heavy is the Head almost upon us we at GRM wanted to peel back the years and take a look at Stormzy’s beginning. We’ve rounded up seven of his early underground videos which you may not have seen before. Feast your eyes below on some vintage Stormz!

1. STORMZY, LARGE, Y.INCH & DON D (GHETTO SUPERSTARZ) – “CLIFTON BLOODLINE FREESTYLE”

One of the first encounters with Stormzy musically was this classic hood video from 2010. The former south London collective Clifton Bloodline went back-to-back on the classic “Laid And Sprayed” beat by Master Spray. Showcasing his talent from early, Stormzy sprayed quite the bar in, “My mum said I need to eat more fruit…. blueberry spliff that’s my five a day”. You can’t teach that.

2. STORMZY, WEAZ & STRAPZY – “BAD GUY”

Now this was a classic. In what was a big South London link up back in the day, this saw Stormzy, Weaz and Don Strapzy come through with a cold track. Very much in his rap element – like the majority of his earlier work – he makes a quick crud filled cameo. “I’ll tell a p*ssy back off like a girl’s ass”.

3. STORMZY- “I’M BACK”

Sporting a colourful Unsigned Stars chain, following his victory in the competition, Stormzy was back with a bang in this video. There was a real statement of intent in this one, going in over the Cam’Ron and Vado “Speaking In Tungs” instrumental. With a youthful tone in his voice here, could it breaking have been the catalyst to his rise?

4. STORMZY – “MY LAST” FREESTYLE

Another in many moments of versatility, the Thornton Heath star decided to cover Chris Brown’s “My Last” track in 2011. Minus the dancing and flashy visuals, he did a good job of covering it. We’ve seen him hit up many slower tempo beats to finesse the ladies since.

5. STORMZY – “THE UK RAP SCENE”

Imagine some of the best rappers and media outlets battling one another? That was a dream Stormzy had back in 2010. Entitled “The UK Rap Scene”, he made a track pinpointing a number of head-to-heads he would have loved to have seen in the booth.

6. STORMZY – “STREETZHARDEST.TV FREESTYLE” FT. BULLY

In 2010, Stormzy jumped on a freestyle with fellow South London rapper Bully (now Big Bullz) in a Bloodline/DSN link up. Not so Big Mike is towered over (it’s not often you hear that) by Bully, but that doesn’t stop him going in with a tight flow.

7. STORMZY – “HAMMERTIME” FT. SWIFT, DEEPEE & BONKAZ

When you talk about gems from the vault, this is certainly one of them. Swift, Deepee, Bonkaz and Stormzy all on the same track together before the upper echelons of the scene were visible. Coming off of his previous 168 mixtape, hosted by the legendary Dice, we are treated to a banger from the quartet. Crazy to think what all four have gone on to achieve since!
