From September, people will need to provide proof of double vaccination to enter nightclubs, the vaccines minister has announced.

Speaking to the commons this afternoon, Nadhim Zahawi said: “By the end of September everyone aged 18 and over will have the chance to receive full vaccination and the additional two weeks for that protection to really take hold.

“So at that point we plan to make full vaccination a condition of entry to nightclubs and other venues where large crowds gather.

“Proof of a negative test will no longer be sufficient.”

He added that there will be “appropriate” exemptions for people with medical conditions that prevent them from being vaccinated.

Mr Zahawi promised that the plans would be subject to parliamentary scrutiny, and that there would be “appropriate” exemptions for people with a medical condition that means they cannot be vaccinated.

The government’s plans to make full vaccination a condition of entry into crowded places comes on the same day they have lifted all social distancing measures and legal limits on social contact – permitting the re-opening of venues such as clubs.

Until September, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is urging nightclubs now to “make use of the NHS Covid pass, which shows proof of vaccination, a recent negative test or natural immunity as a means of entry.”
