Players in a third-tier match in Argentina were forced to flee the pitch after fans fought among themselves, which led to one of the head coaches being shot in the shoulder.

The incident took place on Sunday in a game between Huracan Las Heras and Ferro de General Pico in the Mendeoza province.

According to sports newspaper Ole, Ferro Head Coach Mauricio Romero received a gunshot wound to the shoulder as organised fans groups linked to Huracan clashed with one another.

Video emerged online of Romero being treated for the wound.

“Romero is doing well and out of danger,” Ferro tweeted after the game.

“After leaving the stadium he underwent tests in a local hospital and is now giving a statement to police.”

The Federal A-League match was suspended towards the end of the second half, with Huracan winning 3-1.

Huracan said the fighting among fans was “ruining” the club.

“For years families have been chased from grounds,” they said in a Facebook post. “May all those that harm the club stay away so that the real fans can return.”
