For many moderate alcohol drinkers who have felt safe in the knowledge that they are not at risk of cancer, some may be in for a major shock.

Scientists have admitted they are not sure of the exact biological reasons why – but an assessment of existing research into cancer concludes there is clear evidence of a directly harmful effect from drinking even just small amounts of alcohol.

With this, the widely-discussed argument that a glass of red wine is good for your heart, has been questioned by some professors.

To this day, there is no ‘safe level’ of drinking to avoid cancer, but it is worth mentioning the risks are reduced for some cancers when people stop drinking completely.

Obviously, doing this is easier said than done when you’re out getting messy with your mates. Naturally the highest risk is for the extremely heavy drinkers, but is it now time to think twice before splurging on that extra bottle of Ciroc or champers when out in the West End?
