The notorious Fyre Festival, founded by the disgraced Billy McFarland in 2016, may be making a comeback.
McFarland took to social media this week to announce the return of the festival with the tweet, “Fyre Festival II is finally happening. Tell me why you should be invited.”
He even teased that following the “island version” he has his sights on hosting a version of the festival in space with Elon Musk.
He was released from prison last year after serving only four of the six years he was sentenced to for multiple counts of fraud related to the original Fyre Festival. He recently announced his plans to repay the $26 million he owes to investors by focusing on his skills as an alleged creative visionary.
The first Fyre Festival was planned to take place over two weekends on a private beach on the island of Great Exuma in the Bahamas. However, the event turned out to be fraudulent, with attendees experiencing subpar conditions, a lack of basic necessities such as food and water and no musical acts as promised.
The failed festival entered the public zeitgeist when a Netflix documentary explored the tumultuous event and the following fallout.
While it remains to be seen if Fyre Festival II will actually take place, given the infamous history of the original event, it may be wise to approach any future events organised by McFarland with caution.
