What’s great about the young and developing scene we have in London (and beyond), is the sheer diversity of it. It seems every day a new artist is coming to our attention, sounding new and innovative and original, yet still so distinctly British.
Artists are getting weird and artists are getting experimental, and it’s due time we started highlighting some of these creatives that may otherwise slip under our radar. With that being said, welcome back to Go Left; GRM’s guide to alternative grime, hip-hop and R&B, the best of what you may not have heard yet.
After last week’s intermission to review 808INK’s Hungry, we’re back with our normal weekly playlist consisting of fantastic new alternative music.
Following up his successful “Movies” single, GRIM gifts us with “SLW DWN”, a heavily trap-soul inspired track with a strongly executed hook.
Grafter comes next with “97 Ye”, a freestyle over a very old Kanye West beat. Not only is the beat groovy as fuck, but Grafter’s lyrics are so real and relatable, “Look, I used to be so broke, when my Netflix run out I would make a new account just so I could get the free trial” he spits.
Gray from the Badside collective makes the list with his new track “Come Around”. Layered with autotune, Gray seductively insists his girl to “Come Around” for a smoke and chill.
Kieron Boothe features on Go Left once again with his impressive old school style freestyle over Snoop Dogg’s “Gin and Juice”.
Finally, we end with one of the UK’s most promising singers, Jorja Smith. “Something In The Way”, taken from her new EP Project 11, is an anthem for any girl who is moving on from their ex, in which Smith displays beautiful vocals over reggae undertones.
We will be uploading more alternative videos onto our YouTube channel. If you fit in with those who don’t fit in, are part of the Go Left gang and have something wavy for us, send an email to [email protected]
