Fans will have to put their plans for wireless charging on hold as Apple have cancelled the release of AirPower due to hardware issues.

The AirPower product was announced at an Apple event in 2017 and promised to be a wireless charging mat capable of powering up several devices at one time.

The AirPower mat was initially set for release in 2018 however after several pushbacks and delays, Apple have released a statement cancelling its release.

Dan Riccio, Apple’s senior vice president of hardware engineering said in a written statement, “After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologise to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push (sic) the wireless experience forward.”

The statement comes after a period of uncertainty for Apple fans who were eagerly awaiting an update on the product after its announcement two years ago.

According to Tech Crunch, the cancellation may be due to overheating caused by charging coils used in the mat however Apple are yet to confirm this or any other theory.

This cancellation comes after a busy few weeks for Apple in which they have announced several new ventures and new products including a credit card, a video streaming platform, a news subscription service and a gaming service called Apple Arcade.

Fans will also be treated to the release of new AirPods and new iPads.
