A new biopic charting the life of Ian Wright is officially in development, with #Merky Films as co-producers and Stormzy serving as Executive Producer.
Far more than a football story, the film will explore the emotional and deeply personal journey behind one of England’s most beloved sporting figures. From a turbulent childhood shaped by trauma and instability to the life-changing influence of supportive figures around him — including a teacher who believed in him and a protective older brother — Wright’s rise is framed as a story of resilience, survival, and extraordinary determination.
Set against the backdrop of working-class South London in the 1970s and 80s, the biopic follows a young Black British boy born to first-generation Caribbean immigrants as he attempts to carve out a future far beyond the limits placed around him. Long before the fame, goals, and international recognition, Wright was a Sunday league footballer repeatedly rejected by professional clubs, struggling to keep belief alive while navigating the harsh realities of poverty, responsibility, and systemic barriers.
Wright would eventually go on to become one of English football’s most iconic figures, cementing legendary status at Arsenal F.C. as the club’s second-highest goalscorer at the time, while also earning the title of Player of the Century at Crystal Palace F.C.. Across his international career with England national football team, he earned 33 caps and shared the pitch with some of the defining names of the era, including David Beckham and Zinedine Zidane.
Following his retirement in 2000, Wright successfully reinvented himself as one of the UK’s most respected and charismatic football broadcasters, becoming an influential cultural figure whose impact stretches far beyond the sport itself.
