Following the reporting of various instances of hacking, Nintendo has now confirmed that 160,000 accounts have been accessed in hacking attempts.
The gaming giant has said that users logins and passwords were “obtained illegally by some means other than our service” and that these details have been used in previous weeks to gain access to accounts. As a result of this, Nintendo have announced that they will be stopping access to log in Nintendo accounts through the companies NNID, or Nintendo Network ID.
The list of data that has been accessed includes; date of birth, nicknames, email addresses and PayPal information for some users, with the unfortunate use of unauthorised payments taking place.
Victims of the hacking will receive an email stating that if the users NNID and Nintendo account have the same password “your balance and registered credit card / PayPal may be illegally used at My Nintendo Store or Nintendo eShop.” The company are also asking people that have had their details accessed to contact them in order to investigate their purchase history.
