Donald Trump is set to face a trial in the Senate after becoming the third U.S president in history to be impeached by the House of Representatives.

Trump’s impeachment follows a vote in the House which saw him charged with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

The House of Representatives voted 230-197 for abuse of power, while his charge for obstruction of Congress resulted in a vote of 229-198 – with most Democrats voting in favour of the charges and all Republicans against them.

However, Donald Trump’s Republicans control the Senate so it is quite unlikely that he’ll be removed from office.

Addressing the impeachment, the White House released a statement on behalf of Trump, explaining that he is “confident that he will be fully exonerated” in a Senate trial.

Trump’s trial in the Senate is due to begin next month.
