Anthony Joshua has triggered the rematch clause in his contract and will face off against Andy Ruiz Jr again in a bid to reclaim his heavyweight titles.
AJ suffered a disappointing defeat over the weekend during his American debut fight which took place at Madison Square Garden in New York City. As previously reported, the fight took place in front of 20,000 people and ended in the seventh round after it was stopped by the referee.
Anthony Joshua took intense damage from Ruiz Jr and was knocked down twice in the third round by the Mexican-American boxer.
The rematch news was announced by boxing promoter Eddie Hearn who said, “After meetings with AJ, Rob McCracken and the management team in NY, we have today triggered the contracted rematch clause with Andy Ruiz Jr. The fight will take place in Nov/Dec at a venue to be confirmed shortly”.
Following his loss, AJ told the press, “Boxing is a tough sport, but I train hard and I got beaten by a good fighter, it will be interesting to see how far he goes, but this is all part of the journey. This is the risk we take. Every fighter deserves respect so congratulations to him. I respect every fighter, this is all part of the legacy, it’s how strong I come back. He’s a champion for now, I shall return”.
He later added, “I didn’t even ask about a rematch clause because I was so confident I was going to win. If it’s there, we’ll go again and I’ll get the titles back. I’m going to beat him up. I’m not dwelling on it. You just correct it, you adjust, you sit down, you focus and you go again”.
