As part of their new package of updates to Google search, the tech giant has unveiled their new hum to search feature which is available via Google Assistant for both Android and iOS.

Using their microphones, users can hum a familiar track for 10-15 seconds after pressing using the Search a song or What’s this song feature.

Using the user’s vocals, Google will then offer back search results using the tune and melody.

In a blog post, a spokesperson for Google said, “We’ve all had that experience of having a tune stuck in our head, but can’t quite remember the lyrics. Now, when those moments arise, you just have to hum to search, and our AI models can match the melody to the right song.”

“When you hum a melody into Search, our machine learning models transform the audio into a number-based sequence representing the song’s melody. Our models are trained to identify songs based on a variety of sources, including humans singing, whistling or humming, as well as studio recordings.”

“The algorithms also take away all the other details, like accompanying instruments and the voice’s timbre and tone. What we’re left with is the song’s number-based sequence or the fingerprint.”

In addition to this new feature, Google has also made changes to their spelling algorithm, video semantics tools and statistics gathering.
