iPhone users in the UK will have the opportunity to experience a brand new upgrade that could, quite literally, save lives.

Emergency SOS Via Satellite is a revolutionary new feature which allows emergency signals to be sent out via satellite, even in areas where there is no cellular network connection. This means that iPhone users will be able to seek emergency help in situations where they would usually have no service.

So how will it work? Well, if your signal isn’t strong enough to make an emergency call, you can send an SOS text message by selecting an issue from options including Sickness or Injury, Lost or Trapped, Fire and more. The message will be sent via satellite, your location will be confirmed and you’ll receive regular updates about the help that’s on its way.

But what’s the catch? This function will only be available on the iPhone 14, which could set users back at least £849 when buying up-front.

However, this upgrade could give a whole new meaning to “I can’t live without my phone”. The feature is already available to iPhone users in the US and Canada, and it’s about time the UK benefitted from it too.
