While the rest of the world seems to be moving in the direction of legalisation with regards to cannabis, the UK seems to be moving in the total opposite direction.
The new Home Secretary Suella Braverman is reportedly “receptive” to the idea of the reclassification of the drug, which would put it in the same category as cocaine, ecstasy and heroin. Braverman is of the belief that cannabis has not been policed properly, and thus is keen to devise new, more effective methods of doing so.
Despite another source claiming that it’s a “very big stretch of the imagination” to suggest that she herself wants to reclassify the drug, it’s clear that she supports other Tory police and crime commissioners who want reclassification.
What this would mean is that sentences for possession would increase from five to seven years, and charges for supplying the drug could carry a potential life sentence.
