In a bizarre turn of events, North Yorkshire Police were taken aback when a man in his 50s dialled emergency services to self-report his own drink-driving on Monday.

The unusual call came in before noon, with the man confessing to the 999 call handler that he was “drink driving and doesn’t know what he is doing” in the Knaresborough area. He attributed his state to a “heavy weekend”.

Quick-thinking officers managed to extract sufficient information from the caller to locate him approximately 15 minutes later.

Subsequent roadside breathalyser testing revealed an alarming result, as the man was found to be over three times the legal limit. The legal limit on a breathalyser is 35, but the man’s test yielded a staggering 118.

Following the test results, the man was promptly arrested on suspicion of drink driving and remains in custody, as confirmed by the police on Monday.
