An extra bank holiday has been declared to mark the coronation of King Charles III.

The bank holiday was announced by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak who said the time off will allow people to “come together and celebrate”.

“The coronation of a new monarch is a unique moment for our country,” Mr Sunak said in a statement released earlier today (November 6). “In recognition of this historic occasion, I am pleased to announce an additional bank holiday for the whole United Kingdom next year.

“I look forward to seeing people come together to celebrate and pay tribute to King Charles III by taking part in local and national events across the country in his honour.”

The extra bank holiday will fall on Monday 8 May 2023, following the coronation at Westminster Abbey on Saturday 6 May.

The occasion will see King Charles crowned alongside his wife, Camilla, the Queen Consort.

Buckingham Palace has said the ceremony will “reflect the monarch’s role today and looks towards the future” while staying “rooted in long-standing traditions and pageantry”.
