Variety has confirmed from its sources that a prequel series to Game of Thrones based on George R.R. Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg is currently in early development at HBO.
The series would be set 90 years before the events of A Song of Ice and Fire and will focus on the main characters from the novellas – Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg), who is also Daenarys Targaryen’s grandfather.
No writers or talent are attached to the project, but sources have claimed HBO has made it a priority as the network seeks to build on the success of Game of Thrones.
If the project is made into a series, it would become the second Game of Thrones prequel after the series House of the Dragon starring Matt Smith and Olivia Cooke which is set to debut in 2022.
The show will explore the build-up to the Targaryen civil war in Westeros, also known as the Dance of Dragons.
The series hasn’t been greenlit just yet despite excitement from fans so stay tuned to hear more.
