You could soon be paying for content from some of your favourite influencers as Instagram is now testing a paid subscription feature for creators on its platform.
The launch of the pilot was announced by head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, in a video post.
“Creators do what they do to make a living, and it’s important that that is predictable,” Mosseri said. “Subscriptions are one of the best ways to have a predictable income—a way that is not attached to how much reach you get on any given post, which is inevitably going to go up and down over time.”
The pilot involves 10 U.S. creators – including actor @alanchikinchow and Olympic silver medalist @jordanchiles – who are now able to offer subscriptions to their followers, who’ll be able to access exclusive Lives and Stories after paying a monthly fee.
Prices will range from $0.99 to $99.99 per month and creators can select the price point for their subscriptions.
Instagram will receive feedback from both creators and followers and if it proves to be a success, paid subscriptions on the platform could be rolled out to all creators and influencers.
