The most popular baby names of 2023 have been unveiled and a classic girls’ name, ousted from the top spot in 2022, has reclaimed its throne, according to exclusive data from BabyCentre.
After dominating the charts for over half a decade, Olivia faced defeat in 2022 when Sophia took the lead. However, Olivia has surged back to the number one position, marking a notable change in BabyCentre’s ranking methodology. The parenting platform now treats distinct spellings as separate entries, impacting the standings of names like Sophia and Sofia.
Faye Mingo, a spokesperson for BabyCentre, explained the alteration, noting, “Parents spend a lot of time thinking not only about their baby’s name but how it’s spelt. They may be small, but these differences are important to parents so we will now be including all individual baby name spellings in our charts.”
Earlier this year, BabyCentre’s mid-year data hinted at Lily as the top girls’ name, with Olivia trailing in third place. However, in the final tally, Amelia secured the second spot, followed by Isla in third. Ava claimed fifth place, with Freya, Ivy, Sophia, Grace and Willow completing the top 10.
On the boys’ side, the top five names maintained their positions from the previous year, with Muhammad leading the pack. The rest of the top five included Noah, Theo, Leo, and Oliver. Notably, Jack, which held a higher rank earlier in the year, slipped to 10th place.
In a nod to social media trends, the rise of “witchcore” has influenced baby names, with monikers exuding “witchy vibes” gaining popularity. Sage witnessed a doubling in registrations for boys, while Lyra secured a spot in the girls’ top 100 at 75th place. Matilda approached the top 40, and Luna secured a spot in the top 20.
