Premier League clubs have unanimously approved the implementation of Semi-Automated Offside Technology (SAOT) starting from the 2024/25 season, with an expected rollout in September or October.

The move aims to address concerns over the efficiency and transparency of offside decisions, particularly in instances where human error has led to controversial rulings.

Currently, offside decisions are subjected to VAR review, but delays and confusion persist, as evidenced by recent incidents like Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal against Tottenham due to communication breakdowns among officials.

The new SAOT system will replace the current Hawk-Eye gridline method, utilising calibrated cameras around the pitch, similar to the technology employed in the UEFA Champions League.

The Premier League said in a statement, “The technology will provide quicker and consistent placement of the virtual offside line, based on optical player tracking and will produce high-quality broadcast graphics to ensure an enhanced in-stadium and broadcast experience for supporters.”

SAOT, previously used in Serie A and set to debut in La Liga, is anticipated to save an average of 30 seconds per decision. Unlike the existing system, SAOT notifies assistant referees of offside infractions in real-time, enabling swift flag-raising during ongoing play.

While not identical, SAOT’s implementation mirrors its use in the 2022 Qatar World Cup, where a ball-embedded chip facilitated offside calls. UEFA also plans to adopt this chip-in-ball version for Euro 2024.

The Premier League’s adoption of SAOT marks a significant step forward in leveraging technology to improve officiating standards and streamline the game’s decision-making processes.
