The UK government, led by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, is contemplating a potential crackdown on social media access for children under 16.
This includes discussions involving considerations for bans, according to a report from anonymous sources via Bloomberg.
Plans are reportedly underway to launch a consultation in January to assess the potential harm to children from social media use.
Although discussions are in early stages and the final policy remains uncertain, sources indicate that bans are being considered but may not be part of the ultimate plan.
The Online Safety Act, recently enacted in the UK, aims to enhance the accountability of companies providing user-to-user services, particularly for the protection of children online.
Despite this, concerns have been raised by the National Crime Agency about children’s safety on Facebook following Meta Platform Inc.’s introduction of encrypted messaging.
ishi Sunak’s office declined to comment on the ongoing discussions.
