Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is facing charges of misconduct from the Football Association (FA) over alleged breaches of betting regulations.

The 23-year-old, who joined the club from AC Milan in a £55 million deal last July, is currently serving a 10-month ban imposed by the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) for similar infractions in Italy.

According to the FA, Tonali is accused of placing 50 bets on matches between August 12 and October 12, 2023, contravening betting rules. His FIGC ban stemmed from wagers placed on matches involving his former clubs Brescia and Milan, leading FIFA to extend the sanction globally.

Newcastle United issued a statement affirming their awareness of Tonali’s misconduct charge, also saying, “Sandro continues to fully comply with relevant investigations and he retains the club’s full support.”

With his ban extending until August, Tonali will be ineligible to participate in Euro 2024 and has only played 12 matches for his club this season.

The Italian international, fined 20,000 euros (£17,380), initially faced an 18-month suspension, later reduced after agreeing to an eight-month therapeutic program targeting gambling addiction.

Tonali has until April 5 to respond to the FA’s charges, as the investigation into his alleged misconduct progresses.
