It’s a sad day for tennis fans, as Serena Williams has today announced that she will pack her rackets away for good, as she retires from the sport.

The 40 year old has won a total of 23 grand slam singles titles across her illustrious career and today broke the news via Vogue magazine.

She said, ““I have never liked the word retirement. Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me.

“I never wanted to have to choose between tennis and a family. I don’t think it’s fair. If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family.”

Serena welcomed her first child, Olympia, in 2017 alongside her entrepreneur husband Alexis Ohanian.

The US Open, which starts this month and runs through September, is anticipated to be her final participation in a major tournament.
