Lets make a change!
Last year an online petition was launched to have Black History taught in all UK schools. Stephanie Pitter feels that Black History should be part of the national curriculum in which she believes it will “enrich the development of the spiritual, moral, social and cultural needs of all ethnic groups.”
So far the petition has received 35,207 signatures in 11 months but with the closing date for the petition being the 10/2/2015 a lot still needs to be done.
As we saw for the GRM Best Of 2014, the voters came out in numbers to show their support to their favourite acts. 40,000 of you casted your votes in the space of a week.
Well now is our chance to show that if we all unite we can actually raise the issue in parliament of Black History being taught within our schools. With it being a year of elections, many have predicted that the overall numbers of voters may be at an all time low. However this is an opportunity to have our voices heard on something many actually feel strongly about.
Miss Pitter also stated in interview with The Voice newspaper “I don’t want our history to be just about slavery, Martin Luther King or Mary Seacole. I’m not belittling these – they are major events and people in our history, but there is a lot more too that simply goes unnoticed.”
“We will never cut out racism but teaching black history in our schools would help our children realise where they have come from and where they are going. It helps children from other backgrounds understand each other’s culture – how and why they behave.”
The mother-of-four is so dedicated to the matter that she takes time out to teach black history voluntarily at her children’s school. Numbers don’t lie, and if we can reach the 100,000 mark showing we can take action on things we feel strongly about. Let’s make a statement to David Cameron and his merry men in parliament that we do have a voice and can use it when we feel there is a valid cause worth fighting for.
Click here to sign the e-petition as we try to progress changes within our country. Time is running out so if you’re willing to make a change please help others become aware and share this information.
