Last month Stormzy announced the launch of his very only scholarship programme, a programme that plans to fund sending two black students to Cambridge University each year. The announcement was met with both overwhelming and well deserved praise as well as some controversial opinions. Following this, Stormzy made a guest appearance on the Over The Bridge Podcast to talk about it all.
The Over The Bridge Podcast was created by four black and mixed race Cambridge alumni. Their podcast often touches on topics relating to black culture, excellence and education. Subsequently the topic of The Stormzy Scholarship was one very close to home for the members.
On this episode of the podcast, Stormzy talks about why he feels a personal responsibility to do what he can with his platform, noting what many others in the scene such as Krept, Konan and Tinie Tempah have done. He goes onto state that despite a niche of negative backlash on social media about the launch of the scholarship, the positivity trumped it and was what he chose to soak up. The members of the podcast refer to their personal experience with the lack of black students at Cambridge and along with Stormzy they chop it up and discuss reasons for it.
