A recent survey by Emucasino explored the complexities of infidelity, revealing that a shocking number of people admitted to cheating on a partner.
One in 10 people admitted to keeping their affairs a secret forever and the overall percentage of confessions was even higher.
28% out of 1000 respondents all admitted to cheating on their partners at some point during their relationship.
The survey disclosed that over one-fifth of respondents waited more than a month to confess, with 9% concealing their infidelity for less than a month.
Relationship expert Barbara Santini said, “With infidelity, whether it was a calculated, premeditated liaison, or an impulsive act is something to consider within the complexities of why people cheat.
“A calculated affair could suggest a level of emotional detachment and a willingness to risk the primary relationship. An impulsive affair could indicate poor self-control or even an underlying issue like addiction. Both require different therapeutic approaches: One needs to learn empathy and risk assessment, while the other needs impulse control.
“If a person decides to come clean about their infidelity, it may indicate a level of guilt and a desire for genuine penance. But here’s where it gets tricky: Are they confessing to relieve their own guilt, or because they can’t bear the emotional load of deception weighing on the relationship? The motive changes the narrative entirely. Meanwhile, choosing to keep it a secret can be equally complex: Is it to shield the partner from pain, or is it a self-protective act to avoid the consequences?”
Whilst it’s of course only a finite number of people taking part in the study, the percentage of people cheating is sure to surprise many.
