The iconic Woolworths brand might be making a comeback to UK high streets, according to its CEO, Roman Heini.

Expressing his interest in adding new UK stores to his ambitious plans, after the disappearance of its stores in 2009 due to the British firm’s administration after a century of operation.

He said, “I don’t know of any brands where the recognition will be as high as it is in Britain, without having any stores. We have secured all the trademarks for the brand for the whole of Europe, so we could operate if we make the decision. It may be in the mix for the mid or long-term future.”

Woolworth Germany, under Heini’s leadership, has successfully reestablished itself, boasting over 600 shops and expanding into Austria and Poland.

The stores focus on own-brand household goods and clothing, maintaining a unique position in the market by not selling online.

Drawing on his experience as the former head of Aldi and Lidl, Heini sees a significant market opportunity in Europe, emphasising the potential for future players to tap into a market of over 300 million consumers without a dominant player.

The revival of Woolworths in the UK could mark a nostalgic return for shoppers and a strategic expansion for the brand in the ever-evolving retail landscape.
