A whole host of footballing greats have agreed to take part in a tournament that is the first of its kind.
Many players from a vast selection of different World Cup winning nations have agreed to take part in the tournament. The England team is due to feature legends such as Michael Owen, Ashley Cole, Joe Cole, Rio Ferdinand, David James, Frank Lampard, Robbie Fowler and Steve McManaman.
The list of greats is truly extensive, Kaka, Ronaldinho, Cafu and Rivaldo are also thought to be lacing up their boots once more. Other names including Mesut Ozil, David Villa, Carlos Puyol, Fabio Cannavaro and Francesco Totti, and Henry are also due to take part.
The tournament is being organised by the EPG (Elite Players Group), a collective made up by former footballers, and the cup is due to be called the EPG Cup. To take part in the tournament there are a few prerequisites that need to be met like all the players have to be aged 35 and over, and also need to have either attained a cap for their country at international level, or appeared 100 times at the top level of the game domestically.
Although the games will retain the 11 aside format of the traditional game and other tournaments, the match length will only be 70 minutes, as opposed to the 90 mins of the normal game. The EPG Cup is due to take place on the 4th and 5th June, with the final scheduled to take place on the 11th of June. The timing ensures that the EPG is sandwiched nicely between the Champions League Final and the Euros kicking off on the 14th of June.
