It’s been a year since the Grenfell Tower tragedy. The inquest is still going on, and there have been meagre signs of justice. Music has proven to be a great tonic for the survivors, allowing their voices and stories to cut through the noise. Tributes have come from far and wide, the polymath Lowkey producing one of the most powerful; with his haunting “Ghosts Of Grenfell”.
Yousra Cherbika and Johara Menacer are two 13 year old survivors of the fire, and they have released a song in memory of their friends and loved ones that died in the Grenfell Tower fire. The song entitled “Fire In Grenfell”uses the familiar instrumental from Professor Green and Emeli Sande’s hugely successful “Read All About It”.
The heartfelt lyrics was composed by the girls in the hotel they’ve been living in since their homes were destroyed; and they settled on “Read All About It” as the backing track, because one of their friends who passed away in the fire sang the original in a talent contest.
