It’s the first Saturday of the month which means that it is Black Pound Day.
The campaign sees people across the UK supporting and investing in Black-owned businesses for the day, with the description reading: “We will replace our normal purchases with Black-owned businesses where possible for one full day.”
The Black Pound Day initiative was created by musician Swiss from the legendary So Solid Crew in response to the horrendous killing of George Floyd, which took place in Minnesota last month and sparked worldwide Black Lives Matter protests.
The official organisation’s website states: “Black Pound Day is a solution-based approach to support the growth of the UK Black economy. As a direct and peaceful response to the systematic racism that creates un-equality for the Black community in the United Kingdom.”
“[Swiss’] idea hopes to underpin our long-term financial growth and infrastructure, empowering and motivating the Black community.
“The day is also an opportunity to find out how everyone can support Black businesses over the long-term. So don’t forget to share brands that you love, businesses that you can’t live without, and make sure to hashtag #BlackPoundDay.”
