Potter Payper’s rise to the top of the UK Rap game has been a tale of redemption. Coming out of prison after a considerable hiatus from the scene, he returned with a point to prove. Whether it’s been dropping two classic tapes already, (Training Day 3 and Thanks for Waiting), teaming up with Nines for an iconic edition of “Gangsteritis”, to even jumping on an Ed Sheeran record, Potter is finally fulfilling the immense potential we always knew he had.
With this undeniable success comes intrigue and interest throughout the industry. Naturally, as he asserts himself as a household name not only in UK rap but UK music, on the whole, more and more people want to know about the man behind the music. As a result, BBC 1Xtra has released the first segment of a multi-part conversation with Potter.
This initial episode is entitled “Before Payper there was Potter”. As you can imagine from the title, the main subject matter delved into is Potter’s childhood, and how it shaped the artist we all love today. Going into depth about the realities of growing up in Barking, Potter chooses a nostalgia-tinged tracklist to accompany the conversation. Ranging from the likes of Styles P to P!nk, we’re offered a holistic view of the boy before the man.
