Tyson Fury defeated Dillian Whyte and keeps his WBC heavyweight title after an exciting fight at London’s Wembley last night.
94,000 people attended the fight, the biggest boxing audience in post-war Britain and despite confirming his retirement, Tyson also announced that he is set to fight UFC champion Francis Ngannou.
Speaking to BT Sport after his win, Fury said, “This might be the final curtain for the Gypsy King. I’ve spent a lot of time on the road. I’ve been away for a long time. I fulfilled everything I’ve ever wanted to fulfil. I will retire as only the second heavyweight in history, after Rocky Marciano, to retire undefeated. I was unbeatable at this game.
“I promised my lovely wife Paris that after the third fight with Deontay Wilder that would be it and I meant it. I then got offered to fight at Wembley and I thought I owed it to the fans to come here and fight. Now it’s all done I have to be a man of my word, what a way to go out.”
Flooring Whyte with an uppercut in the sixth round, the fight ended when Fury was declared the winner after a referee ended the fight. Tyson praised his opponent and said: “Dillian Whyte is a warrior and I believe he will be world champion but tonight he met a great in the sport, one of the greatest heavyweights of all time. There is no disgrace. He is a tough, game man. He is as strong as a bull and has the heart of a lion but he was not messing with a mediocre heavyweight. He was messing with the best man on the planet.”
After discussing his retirement, Tyson then had a joint interview with Ngannou on US outlet ESPN.
Tyson said, “This is going to be one very special fight. It’ll be something never before seen in the history of our sport. We’re not talking two guys around 140lb, I’m 270lb, he’s 270lb. It’s going to be an explosive fight when it happens. I’m the boxing heavyweight champion, he’s the UFC heavyweight champion, he’s in great shape, look at the muscles on him.”
