Boris Johnson is set to imminently announce his resignation as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

According to reports, Mr Johnson’s resignation letter has been drafted and will quit today (July 7).

Sky News has reported that the PM has spoken to the Tory 1992 Committee Chairman, Sir Graham Brady, and has agreed to stand down.

A No 10 source has said a new Conservative Party leader will be in place by the time of the party’s annual conference in October.

A separate No 10 spokesman has now said: “The prime minister will make a statement to the country today.”

News of Boris Johnson’s decision to resign comes following mass resignations within government from cabinet level down.

Sajid Javid and Rishi Sunak were among the first to resign, with over 50 more MPs following suit.

Many MPs were prompted to quit over the PM’s handling of sexual misconduct allegations against Conservative MP, Chris Pincher, as well as the recent government scandals including partygate.
